How to Find Stocks to Day Trade: A Morning Playbook (2026)
Finding stocks to day trade is not about picking winners from a list of thousands. It's about narrowing the market to a small handful of tickers that meet a few clear criteria — then focusing your attention on those. Here's the exact filter most consistent momentum traders use.
The four criteria that matter
- Unusual relative volume. Aim for RVOL above 5. Anything lower is usually noise.
- A real catalyst. Earnings, guidance, a filing, an FDA update, a contract win. Moves without a reason fade.
- Enough liquidity to enter and exit. If you can't get filled cleanly on paper, don't trade it live.
- A share price you can size into. A $400 stock is off-limits with a $500 account. Cap your results.
Where to look
The morning list comes from three places:
- Pre-market gappers. Stocks up (or down) 5%+ before the open on real volume.
- Relative volume leaders. Tickers trading 5×+ their normal pace, sorted by RVOL.
- Catalyst feeds. Earnings calendars, 8-Ks, halts, and news wires — cross-referenced with the scanner.
A repeatable morning routine
- 8:30 ET. Open a scanner. Filter by max price, sort by relative volume.
- 8:35. Skim the top 10. Note the catalyst on each.
- 8:45. Narrow to 3 tickers. Chart pre-market highs/lows and set alerts.
- 9:30. Let the open print. Don't chase. Wait for your setup on your 3 names.
- 10:30. Most opportunities are over. Cut size or step away.
